The founder of laparoscopic bariatric surgery in Romania, Dr. Cătălin Copăescu performed his first laparoscopic bariatric surgery in Romania in 2002. In 2010, he founded the first dedicated bariatrics center – Ponderas Hospital, subsequently purchased by REGINA MARIA in 2016, where he is presently Head of Surgery and Director of the Bariatric Center of Excellence within Ponderas Academic Hospital.

Prof. Dr. Cătălin Copăescu has an impressive professional track record, being the only Surgeon of Excellence in Romania to specialize in metabolic and bariatric surgery with double certification, European (IFSO-EC) and American (SRC).
For over 20 years, Dr. Cătălin Copăescu has been focusing on medical education, having trained over 2,000 physicians at home and abroad in laparoscopic surgery, within the Surgical Training Institute at Ponderas Academic Hospital.
Throughout his career, Dr. Cătălin Copăescu was awarded 10 distinctions, accreditations and national and international awards in recognition of his merits. He is also a member of over 30 national and international expert associations and organizations.
